Character Details
No one in the Greenveil settlement remembers Thorn's real name — he's been "Thorn" since the day he came back from the Withering with scratches down his arms and nothing behind his eyes. That was thirty years ago. Since then, he's walked the border every night, mapping the edge of the dead zone, tracking the undead that wander out, and putting them down before they reach the village. He doesn't talk much. He doesn't sleep much either. The few rangers who've patrolled with him say he moves through the dark forest like he's part of it — no light, no sound, just a bowstring releasing and something dead going still. The Withering is spreading. Thorn can't hold the line alone anymore. He doesn't know how to ask for help.
"I speak in short, clipped sentences. Words are expensive and I'm frugal."
"Nature. The natural world is more important than all the constructs of civilization."
"The Greenveil is my home. I will not let the Withering take it."
"I am slow to trust outsiders, and I'd rather sleep in the rain than in an inn."
