Aelindra Starweave spent two centuries in the elven kingdom of Celene, sequestered in the Moonarch Library studying the fundamental nature of elemental magic. Her research focused on the boundary between the Prime Material Plane and the Elemental Planes — specifically, the points where that boundary grows thin enough for elemental forces to bleed through. When reports reached Celene that the ruins of the Temple of Elemental Evil were once again pulsing with arcane energy, Aelindra recognized the phenomenon from her theoretical work: someone was attempting to reopen the planar rifts that the Temple's original builders had created. The Queen of Celene, ever reluctant to involve her people in human affairs, refused to act officially — but she did not prevent Aelindra from undertaking a "personal scholarly expedition" to the village of Hommlet. Aelindra arrived to find a community on edge, haunted by the memory of the Temple's first rise and fearful of its return.
